Intersolar Summit Brasil Nordeste: Carbon Market, Centralised Generation, Microgrids and Distributed Generation Take Centre Stage on Opening Day

Press Release – Wednesday, April 23, 2025

São Paulo, 23 April 2025 – The conference brought together key figures from the photovoltaic solar energy sector and related industries. Alongside an exhibition and workshops, the event continues on Thursday 24 April.

Intersolar Summit Brasil Nordeste, one of the region’s most comprehensive events focusing on solar generation and related topics, launched its fifth edition in Fortaleza this Wednesday 23 April. The Ceará Events Centre hosted crucial discussions about the carbon market, centralised generation, microgrids and distributed generation during the conference. First-day attendance exceeded organisers’ expectations. Visitors explored the latest industry innovations across a 7,500-square-metre exhibition space and attended workshops providing vital market insights for professionals. Organised by Aranda Eventos & Congressos in partnership with Germany’s Solar Promotion International, the Summit facilitates strategic discussions that will shape the industry’s future.

During the keynote session, Florian Wessendorf, CEO of Solar Promotion International, highlighted the impressive growth of Brazil’s solar industry in recent years and the significance of the Northeast region. “This conference brings together key industry players to debate the major trends in the country’s energy transition and their regional implications,” he said. “Solar energy can light the way to a cleaner, greener and more sustainable world.”

Celso Mendes, a consultant for Aranda Editora, emphasised Intersolar’s pioneering role in Brazil, having stimulated discussions even before the first photovoltaic energy regulations were introduced, while forecasting a positive outlook for the coming years. Jurandir Picanço, an energy consultant for the Federation of Industries of the State of Ceará (FIEC), provided an overview of the energy transition, connecting solar power to emerging trends including those involving green hydrogen and energy storage.

Luís Carlos Queiroz, president of Sindienergia, discussed Ceará’s expansion in photovoltaic generation, covering both centralised and distributed models. He also mentioned the project led by FIEC to promote green hydrogen in the state.

Rodrigo Sauaia, president of the Brazilian Solar Energy Association (ABSOLAR), outlined key priorities for the industry in 2025. ABSOLAR has been collaborating with regulatory agencies to tackle challenges such as generation curtailment – particularly in solar photovoltaics – and connection refusals for distributed generation due to power flow inversion. Sauaia also spoke about ongoing parliamentary negotiations to enhance the country’s regulatory framework.

In his welcome address, Markus Vlasits, president of the Brazilian Energy Storage Association (ABSAE), predicted that the energy storage market could deliver 15 to 20 GWh of capacity in coming years. He stressed that despite Brazil’s substantial renewable energy potential, the absence of an efficient energy storage strategy could disadvantage consumers.

Panels

The event’s first panel discussion, “Carbon Market: Regulation and Impact on the Solar Industry,” was chaired by Fabiano Machado, director at Apsis Carbon. He mentioned the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE) introducing its own certification standards, potentially lowering costs compared to relying on international voluntary market methodologies. Cândido Henrique, a strategist in Sustainability and Industrial Decarbonisation at FIEC/Senai-CE, explained how solar energy can help major carbon emitters reduce their footprint. Marina Mattar, CEO of Perspectivas, noted that COP29 in Baku finalised Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which governs carbon market rules. She highlighted the solar industry’s opportunity to influence policies that will expand implementation of the global carbon market at COP30 in Belém.

The afternoon sessions began with the panel “Centralised Solar Generation: Challenges and Opportunities,” which provided an overview of this approach. ABSOLAR’s Rodrigo Sauaia discussed solar energy’s rapid recent growth, particularly in the Northeast where many projects are under construction or development. However, he warned about risks from regulatory obstacles, such as the lack of compensation for generation outages. Camila Ramos, CEO of CELA (Clean Energy Latin America), examined solar power plants’ role in the free energy market, citing 31 contracts signed in 2024 including 18 solar and 2 hybrid solar-wind projects. She also identified self-production as a growing niche for long-term contracts. Francisco Habib Issa Mattos, Engineering Director and Board Member of Casa dos Ventos, spoke about the company’s move into solar energy last year, with plans to invest R$4 billion by 2026. He emphasised the need for expanded battery storage to integrate more renewables into Brazil’s grid.

The day finished with the panel “Perspectives on Microgrids and Distributed Generation in the Northeast.” Hanter Pessoa, Distributed Generation Director at Sindienergia, presented regional installation data, demonstrating solar’s increasing role in Brazil’s energy mix. Marcos Izumida, Business Development Manager at Gridspertise, talked about integrated solutions gaining traction, such as generation and load control in microgrids. Everton Gurgel, a lawyer at San Francisco Solar Consultoria Jurídica, addressed tax regulations and legal disputes affecting distributed generation. Lucas Melo, CEO of Sunplena Investimentos em Energia, traced the solar market’s development, stressing the sector’s maturity, particularly regarding distributed generation.

Three workshops also took place: “Photovoltaic Electrical Projects – Mistakes Cost a Lot” by Vinicius Ayrão; “Structuring Recharge Networks” by Rafael Cunha and Cesare Quinteiro; and “How to Ground Your Equipment to Prevent Damage During Atmospheric Discharge” by João Cunha.
